For years, proving trustworthiness online seemed straightforward: collect reviews, display them prominently, let customers decide.

But a statistic from a recent Google event signals how dramatically the landscape is shifting:

Searches of five or more words are growing by up to 8x.

We've moved from keywords to conversations. Search has become a personal, contextual dialogue. Your customer reviews aren't just being read by people anymore. They're being processed, interpreted, and summarised by AI agents that will increasingly make purchasing decisions on behalf of consumers.

AI agents are extraordinarily good at detecting patterns, inconsistencies, and manipulation. They can spot fake reviews, identify cherry-picked feedback, recognise when sentiment doesn't match substance. And unlike human customers who might give you the benefit of the doubt, AI agents simply move on to recommend your competitor.

There is no quick fix. The companies that will flourish are those providing timely, valuable, and relevant feedback that serves both audiences.

If your reviews aren't authentic, AI will know. And it won't recommend you.
