More than 100 years ago the need for International Women’s Day was first recognised, inspired by the work of thousands of suffragists campaigning for rights for women. International Women’s Day remains about creating a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.
When people were asked about what they thought brands should address during International Women's Day celebrations, gender equality in the workplace emerged as the top concern with 78% of the votes. This was felt consistently across all age groups. It proves that people have a unified expectation that brands should focus on addressing gender equality practices within the workplace.
This is my first International Women’s Day since I joined Feefo as CPMO. Personally, I have always liked this day, it allows me to take a moment and look around – check in on how we as a business, as a leadership team, and how I, as an individual, support the women in our organisation.
I took a look back over the IWD themes from the last few years - #breakthebias, #pledgeforparity, #choosetochallenge. These were all meaningful topics, which all shared a common trait: they underscored the urgency and necessity of action. Whether it’s challenging biases, striving for parity or embracing change, these were not merely words, but powerful calls to action.
One of the key pillars of the IWD theme of Inspire Inclusion is the promotion of diversity in leadership and decision-making positions. And that is something I’ve always been impressed with at Feefo - I take pride in being part of an executive team that maintains gender balance, and a Board where nearly half of the members are women.
At Feefo, we have women – incredible women – across the business leading teams and departments. And we are witnessing the emergence of future female leaders who are already showcasing remarkable skills and talents, and who I have no doubt will go on to have hugely successful careers.
To me, it’s abundantly clear that the theme for 2024 - #inspireinclusion – is progressive. It marks a significant step forward in our collective journey towards a more equitable and inclusive workplace. In a world where diversity is not just a buzzword but a fundamental reality, the importance of fostering a culture of inclusion cannot be overstated.
The #inspireinclusion theme is more than just a slogan; it’s a call to action for us to unite, embrace our differences and create an environment where every voice is heard, valued and respected. It’s a space to celebrate diversity and empowerment. It’s a time to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
A gender-equal society needs empowered women and girls who take control of their lives, make their own decisions, and succeed in their chosen pursuits. Days like International Women’s Day step us closer to this world. It’s so important that businesses keep up the momentum of building a culture around inclusivity and empowering woman.
At Feefo, this ethos isn’t just rhetoric – it’s ingrained in our culture, embodied by every member of our team. Today, and every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a company that champions inclusivity and empowers women to thrive. Brands who celebrate women every day, especially internally, will grow.
